Britney has made tremendous strides this year in what isn't really a comeback because she didn't go anywhere! Britney's music was only part of her impressive year. Here is a recap of the rest of Brit's exciting 2008!

Britney really caught people's attention this year when she made a guest appearance on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother on March 24. Her appearance gave the show its highest ever ratings, and it was no surprise she was invited to guest on a second episode that aired May 12. She was later nominated for a People's Choice Award for the role.

Circus sells 203,000 - coming in at #3 this week

Taylor Swift's sophomore Big Machine album "Fearless" tops The Billboard 200 for a fourth non-consecutive week after selling 262,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 21% sales decline from last week.

With the continued success of her track "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", Beyonce's "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" (Music World/Columbia) leaps up 5-2 on a 7% sales boost to 211,000. Britney Spears' Jive set "Circus" rebounds 4-3 with 203,000 (+4%), while Nickelback's "Dark Horse" (Roadrunner) climbs 6-4 with 177,000 (-9%).

Re-entering the top tier with an 11-5 move is Kanye West's "808s and Heartbreak" (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam), on a 16% jump in sales to 165,000 units. The Chop Shop/Atlantic soundtrack to "Twilight" moves 148,000 copies (-5%) and ascends a notch 7-6.

After a No. 2 debut last week, Keyshia Cole's "A Different Me" (Geffen) takes a 61% sales plunge to 127,000, moving the set down to No. 7. Similarly, Jamie Foxx's "Intuition" (J) experiences the same decline in its second week to 105,000 and slips 3-9.

The 29th volume of the multi-label "Now!" hits compilation climbs 10-8 on a 12% decline to 122,000. David Cook rounds out the top 10 with his self-titled 19 Recordings/RCA debut, ascending 13-10 with 101,000 (-22%).

In this last chart week of 2008, sales totaled 17.02 million, up 17% compared to the final week of 2007. However, the week ending Dec. 28, 2008 included three full days of pre-Christmas shopping. The final week of 2007 ended on Dec. 30, and only contained one day of last minute holiday shopping.)

There were 428.4 million albums sold this year, down 14.4% compared to 2007's 500.5 million. Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" (Cash Money/Universal) was the top seller of the year with 2.88 million copies.

Jamie Lynn Decoy Pissed -- May Sue Los Angeles

TMZ has learned the L.A. Airport Police and the City of Los Angeles may end up getting sued over a bungled attempt to protect Britney Spears' sister, Jamie Lynn.

Last September 11, when Jamie Lynn flew to Los Angeles, LAX cops tried to divert the paparazzi by using a decoy whom they escorted to baggage claim. The impromptu decoy -- Adessa Eskridge -- happened to be on the same plane as Jamie Lynn.

Eskridge's lawyer, Chuck Vernon, tells us one of the cops told Eskridge as she got off the plane, "You're going to help us with something." He says it was almost as if she was taken into custody. Vernon says cops told Eskridge to walk with them as they made their way to baggage claim.

Vernon says as the eight officers escorted his client, she took her sunglasses off but they told her to put them back on. As they reached the bottom of the escalator, she was suddenly and unwittingly besieged by paparazzi.

Jamie Lynn was able to beat a hasty retreat from the airport, undetected by the media.

Vernon says Eskridge has filed a claim for money with the City of L.A., a prelude to filing a lawsuit. Vernon says a City rep from Risk Management contacted him yesterday. Vernon vows, if the claim is rejected, Eskridge will file a lawsuit claiming false arrest and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

Britney's Year in Review: Music!

2008 was such a whirlwind year for Britney's music. There is no better time to sit back and reflect than now, with 2009 right around the corner. Here is a quick little recap of ALL the amazing things Britney did in her professional music career this year.

In the very beginning of the year, Britney's third single 'Break the Ice' from her fifth studio album Blackout was released. The song reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. The music video debuted on TRL on March 17 featuring a very sexy anime version of Brit.

On September 7, Britney won THREE MTV Video Music Awards in the categories 'Best Female Video,' 'Best Pop Video' and 'Video Of The Year' for 'Piece of Me.'

Just a week later, Jive released a statement announcing the title of Britney's sixth studio album, Circus. The first single, 'Womanizer' was released on September 26. On October 15 the song jumped to number one, breaking records in the process.

Britney then went on to repeat her success at the VMA's by winning two awards at the Europe Music Awards for 'Album of The Year' for Blackout and 'Act of 2008'. The evening she received the awards, Britney was in Los Angeles, where she made a cameo appearance at Madonna's concert at Dodger Stadium.

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday and weekend, Britney went on a promotional tour for Circus. She performed at the Bambi Awards in Germany, Star Academy in France, and X Factor in the U.K.

Then on December 2, Circus was released and Britney performed on Good Morning America, to celebrate her 27th birthday. She also announced her upcoming tour The Circus Starring Britney Spears.

Circus debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 505,000 copies and being certified GOLD in its first week. The 'Circus' music video debuted on Entertainment Tonight on December 4 and was Brit's highest debuting single EVER coming in at number 3.

As the year rounded out, Britney made two appearances in Japan. Over the last few weeks more tour dates were announced including 8 shows at the 02 in London.

People: Britney Is The Hottest Human Being On Earth

Personal troubles or no, Britney Spears is still the hottest human being on Planet Earth, according to USA Today’s annual Celebrity Heat Index, which measures how much exposure a star gets in print and online.

Brit got more media attention than anyone else for 11 weeks this year, meaning she earned the top spot on the index for the second year in a row. That coverage included everything from her infamous breakdown last January to her best-selling album, just released on Dec. 2.

It’s just another feather in Britney’s cap, following her selection by PEOPLE readers as having the “best comeback” of 2008 as well as being the “most talked about celebrity.”

Nipping at Spears’s heels on the index were Angelina Jolie (No. 2), Jennifer Aniston (No. 3) and the man they have in common, Brad Pitt. Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith, meanwhile, dropped out of the Top 10 altogether.

Robert Pattinson, Blake Lively and Barack Obama made the index for the first time, and the divorce between Madonna and Guy Ritchie qualified as hottest breakup.

Online readers also said they wished they could get more of Reese Witherspoon and Patrick Swayze, who revealed he has pancreatic cancer in March.

Sources close to Britney Spears tell E! that despite U.K. tabloid babblings to the contrary, Britney did not fly off to Jodhpur, India, to spend a few days around Christmas with a new Indian boyfriend.

"Britney is not in India," says one Britney source, while another dubs the report a "total fabrication."

Among the erroneous info being shoveled, the U.K. tabloid noted that the Circus singer's supposed new boyfriend, Sandip Soparrkar, choreographed her "Womanizer" video. In fact, the video was choreographed by her longtime choreographer Andre Fuentes.

Britney Spears Plots Drinking Allegations Against Jamie Spears

This year’s Comeback Kid is complaining that Daddy Spears will not let her act like an adult since a court appointed the former chief permanent conservator of her affairs in October, and tabloid moles claim Britney has hatched a sinister plan to have her dad ousted as her legal guardian.

The 27-year-old pop star is plotting to allege that Jamie, a recovering alcoholic, has fallen off the wagon and then take the evidence to court, according to The National Enquirer.

Jamie checked himself into rehab for dependency on alcohol and painkillers in 2004.

“Britney wants to set up her dad and prove he shouldn’t be charge of her career decisions and money….She’s worked her butt off for years, and her father has nothing to do with her success.”

“Britney is desperate to be released from her father Jamie’s control,” one snitch whispers. “She wants to be able to act like an adult, but she says her father won’t let her.”

The Enquirer spy adds, “If the conservatorship is continued, her backup plan is to have her father replaced by her mother Lynne because she’s less rigid.”

Britney Spears is launching her own line of hair extensions! The pop star, who has sported a variety of fake locks since shaving her head in February 2007, is working on introducing a collection of weave to her fans.

“After nearly two years of trying to hide the hideous haircut Britney gave herself, she’s become an expert on weaves, wigs and extensions,” an insider revealed in the January 5 issue of the National Enquirer. “That’s what gave her the idea to launch her own product line.”

“There was a time when Britney dreaded having to wear a wig or extensions whenever she went out in public, but now she’s gotten hooked on them because they’re so much easier than dealing with cuts, coloring and styling.”

“She’s eager to prove that in addition to being a world-class entertainer, she’s also a shrewd businesswoman.” Sources say the collection will debut in stores just in time for the March 2009 launch of Britney’s upcoming Circus World Tour. In fact, the 27-year-old is already consulting with celebrity hair maven Kim Vo, who may assist with the launch.

Did Britney Spears Really Join T-Pain on Stage?

Britney Spears is touring with T-Pain...sort of.

During his performance at the Universal Amphitheater last night, T-Pain brought out little person Terra Jole, a famed Spears impersonator, decked in the pop star's infamous VMA '07 getup. "There's an artist I'd like to introduce," T-Pain said. "They have an album called Circus, and they've joined me on tour." As the hopeful crowd awaited a Spears appearance, Jole took center stage—which was set up as T-Pain's own circus (hence the name of his latest album, Thr33 Ringz)—and danced like only Spears (and an impersonator) can.

While it could be argued that Jole stole the show, attention shouldn't be taken away from T-Pain himself, who performed his set sans his signature Auto-Tune style, but also without blinged-out grill. The hip-hop artist belted out a number of his hit tunes and even showed off his piano skills.

And what about the headliner of the show, Lil Wayne? What T-Pain lacked in oral bling, Lil Wayne made up. The gold-grilled rapper ended the show with his 45-minute set, which included performances of "Make it Rain," "Out Here Grindin'," "Duffle Bag Boy" and "My Life."

But it was the grand finale that proved the most memorable. Out of nowhere, Whitney Houston's 1992 hit "I Will Always Love You" played out. "I love you," Wayne shouted to the crowd as the lights went down.

Kevin Federline Puts Kids off on Britney Spears to Party with New Love

Kevin Federline has put the responsibilities of his two sons off on ex-wife Britney Spears over Christmas holidays in order to party in Las Vegas with new girlfriend Victoria Prince.

Sources claim that Federline will hand the children over to Spears for Christmas and New Years but has not told the singer the reason for his willingness to do so. “Kevin has been getting on much better with Brittney recently, so he didn’t want to risk setting their relationship back by mentioning Victoria,” says a source.

“And he knows she’s desperate to see the boys over Christmas, so he’s letting her visit them at his home over the festive period. He then added she could have them on New Year’s Eve, as is it was a great favor.”

Pussycat Doll Jessica Sutta has launched a scathing attack on Britney Spears - claiming the star isn't bothered about the example she sets her fans.

Sutta - along with bandmates Ashley Roberts; Nicole Scherzinger; Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt - is due to tour with Britney in 2009.

But that didn't stop the 26-year-old taking a swipe at the Toxic singer.

You Can Bank on Britney

The bank of Britney Spears has just opened its vault — again.

The judge in the conservatorship case has just ruled Jamie, Britney’s dad, can get thousands of extra $$$ for the work he’s been doing for his daughter. Jamie was getting $10,000 a month for his fee as the conservator of Brit’s estate.

Today the judge adjusted that amount for the entire year to $16,125 a month, to reflect all the additional work Jamie did — which includes planning her tour for next year.

The judge also gave the green light for Jamie to get office space — Brit will pay $1,200 a month for that.

And there’s more. Brit’s bro, Bryan Spears, will receive $200,000 for services he rendered prior to the time the conservatorship was established.And the lawyers … the bills for all of them are approaching a cool $1 million.

Britneys Dad Gets Comeback Raise

Britney Spears' star is rising again, and she has her dad to thank. And pay.

A Los Angeles court today signed off on a retroactive raise for Jamie Spears, who has been in charge of his daughter's affairs since Feb. 1 and, according to the gavel wielders, has played a significant role in her return to Circus-caliber viability over the past year. Jamie, who has been receiving weekly payments of $2,500 from Britney's estate for serving as guide and guardian, will now get $16,000 per month to cover his workload from last January to November.

"He has been working extra hours related to various activities related to her music and her tour and activities necessary to the conservatorship," L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz said during Monday's hearing.

As of Dec. 1, however, the $2,500-per-week was back in play, Goetz ordered. None of this includes the extra $1,500 a month Jamie will be getting for new office digs to conduct conservatorship business in, and $200,000 "for services rendered prior to the conservatorship" that will be going to Britney's older brother, Bryan, who is a cotrustee of her estate.

The next Spears-business hearing is set for Feb. 3.

The new tour director is Jamie King, who did Britney's "Oops!... I Did It Again World Tour" and Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet Tour". The musical director will be Simon Ellis, who did the Spice Girls "Reuinion Tour".

Britney Flying To India

Paris, Germany, Britain, Japan, New York City, now... India?! According to Extra, Britney is flying across the world to India to meet with Indian choreographer Sandip Soparrkar.

According to reports, "Britney will allegedly meet with Soparrkar for a two-day practice session for the new video of her hit song 'Womanizer.' While Sandip didn't confirm that the two would practice moves for a new 'Womanizer' video, he did confirm that Spears would be heading to India to shake it with him!"

A source close to Britney’s dancers emailed in exclusively to BreatheHeavy.com about callback auditions Britney had at The Alley Cat in Hollywood, CA this afternoon. Apparently both Andre and Wade have quit, with director Jamie King taking over [directed / choreographed Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour, Christina's Back to Basics Tour, Spice Girls Tour etc.].

Britney Wins People's "Best Of 2008" "Most Talked About Star" And "Best Comeback"

Remember Britney was nominated for "Most Talked About Star" and "Best Comeback" for People's "Best of 2008"? The results are in and now, you can guess three times who won. No, make that one time! She won both categories, as deserved! Runner-up for "Most Talked About Star" is Angelina Jolie and for "Best Comeback" Robert Downey Jr.

Sorry to the others in the two categories, but you know it's no competition when B's nominated! ;) She even won the "Most Talked About Person" category with a landslide - 60 percent!

Britney's Prosecution Now Campaign Fodder

Jack Weiss (insert), a top candidate in the 2009 L.A. city attorney's race, is polling registered voters about rival Michael Amerian's role in unsuccessfully prosecuting Britney Spears for a misdemeanor after authorities discovered that she was driving in Los Angeles without a California driver's license.

"Amerian prosecuted singer Britney Spears for driving with an out-of-state driver's license. Normally, people get a ticket for this but Amerian tried to give Spears a criminal record. The judge dismissed the case and Amerian was criticized for using Spears to draw attention to his political campaign," operators are telling voters.

Russell Brand: I’ll Date Britney!

Rumor has it that Britney Spears is now on the lookout for a suitable red carpet escort, with manager Larry Rudolph and father Jamie Spears giving her a helping hand to find the right guy. Reports have linked her with possible dates like Benji Madden, Michael Phelps and Jesse Metcalfe. Attention, Brit! Someone else wants to be in the running!

“She’s looking for a boyfriend now?” Russell Brand exclaimed at last night’s L.A. premiere of Bedtime Stores, after hearing the “Womanizer” singer was on the market again.

“I’m going now! Is she here? I’m just gonna be quick,” he joked to reporters as he pretended to run off the red carpet. “There’s not a moment to lose!” The two had a fun chemistry during the lead-up to MTV’s VMAs this year, filming a series of hilarious TV spots in preparation for the awards. After all, the British comedian did want to make sure Britney knew his last name, as he said to her in one spot, “You will remember that name because I think pretty soon that’s gonna be your surname. Britney Brand.”

“Oh, gosh!” Brit replied with a giggle.”

Britney’s “Circus” Keeps Growing

Sold out shows force pop star to add more. Britney Spears still has the power to sell out an arena.

“The Circus Tour Starring Britney Spears”, her first tour in five years, has been selling out all over the country and now the singer is adding more shows to accommodate the demand for tickets. Livedaily reports that the tour will begin March 3 in New Orleans and will stretch across the US and Canada through May. The Pussycat Dolls will be the opening act.

Spears put Oakland, Calif., and Columbus, Ohio, on the itinerary recently and added a second night to her gig in Uncasville, Conn. There are also two-nights of shows in Newark, N.J.; Uniondale, N.Y.; Anaheim, Calif.; Los Angeles; Toronto; and Chicago.

She will also perform an astounding eight shows at London’s O2 Arena after the North American leg of the tour is completed.

“Circus” was released on Dec. 2 and sold 505,000 copies in its first week, landing it in the No. 1 spot. It was her fifth album to hit the top. The first single, “Womanizer”, made a historic jump on The Billboard Hot 100 when it went from No. 96 to No. 1.

The new single “Circus” and another song, “Kill the Lights” are already being placed on many music charts. Spears has sold more than 62 million albums worldwide, as per her record label Jive.

McCartney And Britney Top “Idol” Wish List

Former Beatle Paul McCartney and pop star Britney Spears are at the top of Simon Cowell’s celebrity wish list as possible mentors on the upcoming season of “American Idol.” But the chances of getting McCartney to appear on the most-watched American television show seem slim.

“We try every year to get Paul McCartney on but for whatever reason he won’t come on,” the judge told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday. Cowell said he would welcome the chance to see Spears on the show, which returns for its 8th season on January 13. The singer is on a comeback roll with a No.1 album and upcoming tour after almost two years of personal woes.

“She would be first on the list. I would love to see her mentor the contestants. But if she doesn’t want to do that and she wants to come on the show to perform, I would welcome her any time,” Cowell said.

He said he would also like to see Beyonce and would welcome back singer-songwriter Lionel Richie and movie director Quentin Tarantino, who was a guest judge in 2004.

“American Idol” has produced some bonafide stars since its 2002 debut, including Grammy award winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

Former contestants Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks were both nominated earlier this month for Grammys. “I absolutely love it when that happens,” Cowell said. “There is so much snobbery in the music business about what we do on this show. So I think it is fantastic.”

Simon Cowell Wants Britney Spears On 'American Idol'

Judge says he'd welcome Brit as a performer or mentor.

Some of the biggest singer/songwriters in pop history have visited "American Idol" over the past few seasons: Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, Tony Bennett, Jon Bon Jovi and even Bono.

But while judge Simon Cowell said during a conference call Wednesday (December 17) that the show has never been able to nail down the one mentor it has tried to get "every year" to help the kids on the show — ex-Beatle Paul McCartney — he has big hopes for this year's slate of mentors. Specifically, he has one name in mind that he would love to see on the marquee: Britney Spears.

"She would, literally, be first on the list as far as I'm concerned in any capacity," Cowell said. He didn't actually divulge who would appear as mentors/performers for the upcoming season — which kicks off January 13 — but he said the door is open any week for Britney to drop in. "I would love to see her mentor the contestants, but if she doesn't want to do that, and she wants to come on the show and perform, I would welcome her anytime."

Part of the reason Cowell is so open to Spears stopping by is that when she appeared on his British talent show "X-Factor" recently, "The buzz we had on our show when she came on was extraordinary. And even with all the stuff that's gone on with her the past two years, there was more excitement and interest in her than I've seen in anyone in years. She would be very, very welcome."

McCartney and Spears are at the top of the list, but Cowell said he'd also love to have another recent "X-Factor" guest make her way to "Idol": Beyoncé. "We just recently had Beyoncé on the British version of the show. ... [She] was absolutely incredible. ... You want those kinds of artists. I'd like people with personalities."

He also opened the door for a couple of past judges/mentors he'd like to see come back: Lionel Richie and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.

Britney Spears Buckling Under The Pressure To Sing Live?

Britney Spears' road to recovery may be about to suffer a setback as the singer buckles under the pressure to sing live.

The pop princess - who was slated for miming her way through 'comeback' performances in Europe and the US - is expected to deliver a polished live act when her world tour comes around in March 2009.

A source close to Britney said, "Britney has been told that if she doesn't deliver on this tour a lot of the public support she has earned is going to fade away.

"Britney is feeling the pressure more and more as she rehearses for the tour."

The source added, "She knows one slip-up and it could all be over for her because she will be crucified in the press.

"After what she's been through, it's hard to imagine how she's going to cope."

Spears plans Indian peace trip

Britney Spears has reportedly decided to visit terror-hit India in a bid to help boost the country's image.

The 27-year-old made plans for the trip after being introduced to an Indian-born choreographer, according to the Daily Star.

Spears will reshoot the video for hit single 'Womanizer' to reflect the positive side of India.

It is thought that choreographer Sandip Soparrkar, whom she met through Madonna, will act as her guide.

"Britney and Sandip think she can make a great difference," claimed a friend of Spears. "She is already well loved in the country and wants to bring some joy to the people.

"She wants to shoot an alternative video and she can’t wait to make her visit. Britney wants to be a regular visitor to India. She really wants to help."

Spears told the Daily Star Sunday that she plans to travel "very soon".

"I love India. Its culture is so rich and colourful," she said. "I’m hoping to visit in the near future. I’d like to thank my Indian fans for loving my music. I will do everything I can to help.

"And I am so happy that Sandip is doing the second video for 'Womanizer'."

These are the ladies who have dominated the 2008 headlines — with more to come in the next few days.

Who was the biggest star of 2008? Who had the most impact on the year that was, who inspired the most headlines or generated the biggest amount of buzz? It's really tough to say ... yet, for decades now, plenty of magazines have been doing just that (we're looking at you, Time). And so, after years of sitting on the sidelines, we here at MTV News have decided to get in on the act too.

Over the next few days, we'll be unveiling our list of the most fascinating, controversial and, well, BRITNEY!!! women of the year.
